Athletic Club, founded in 1898, is the second football club established in Spain. It is commonly known as Athletic Bilbao and competes in La Liga. The club is one of three clubs in Spain that have never been relegated from the top division, alongside with Real Madrid and Barcelona. It has got eight titles of La Liga, 24 titles of Copa del Rey and two Supercopa de España trophies. Besides, Athletic has one of the most successful women’s teams which once won five championships in the in the Primera División Femenina.
The club only signs contract with a player who comes from Basque Country, an autonomous community in northern Spain. It is called Los Leones (The Lions) because its home stadium San Mamés Stadium was built near a church called San Mamés (Saint Mammes). An early Christian Mammes was thrown to the lions by the Romans, then he pacified the lions and was later made a saint.
San Mamés Stadium has become the home stadium of Athletic Club since 2013. On 5 November 2015, it was named the Sports Building of the Year in the World Architecture Festival held in Singapore. Mostly used as football games, Athletic is used to host concerts.
In world football, it is very difficult for a player to play for only one team during his professional career. These players are often considered loyal to their teams.
Jesús Aranguren Merino(26 December 1944-21 March 2011) was a Spanish football defender and coach. He played nearly 400 official games for the club during his 13-year career. Regarded as the best goalkeeper in the history of Athletic and one of the greatest Spanish goalkeepers, José Ángel Iribar Cortajarena(born on 1 March 1943) is another retired footballer and manager of Athletic Club. He appeared in more than 600 official games, winning two Copa del Rey trophies.
The brand new 2017-18 home and away shirts of Athletic Bilbao were launched by New Balance. With the theme of “Unique in the World”, new match jerseys are modern and stylish, and show the classic image of Los Leones.
The home shirt with a white collar features white and red stripes on the front and the back, which continues the tradition of the club. The club crest and the brand logo are printed on the chest. Besides, the sponsor’s name kutxabank is shown, too. However, there was no commercial advertisement on the jersey before 2008. Like the shirts designed for former seasons, there is a small Basque flag at the back of the shirt, representing that Basque is proud of Athletic Bilbao. NB Dry technology used to produce new jerseys keeps players cool and dry when running at football pitches. The moisture-wicking fabric can quickly absorb sweat from body.
Black shorts and red socks complete the home kit. These innovative football products help players focus on games and play well. Not only players but also fans of the club can wear comfortable and breathable football shirts. It will be exciting for fans to wear your favorite club’s shirts.
The 2017-18 away shirt is black and the shorts are gray, in a sharp contrast to the home kit.
